Chapter 16

What did you find?* Ella almost dropped the mirror. Finally, she had a break.

*I can’t tell you this way. Can you meet me in person?* It was then that Ella realized Jaq wasn’t in his mage room, or any discernible place that she knew. Darkness surrounded him, the only illumination coming from the glow of his own mirror.

*Where are you?*

*The fifth circle of Riset and a pub called The Lion’s Den. Meet me here.*

Ella looked at Luca who had stayed behind, an idea forming. She nodded and closed the mirror.

“Want to do something fun?” Ella asked, a small smile forming.

“Always, though sneaking out right now is going to be…interesting.”

“I have a plan, I just get to look like an ungrateful bitch.” She scrunched her face.

Luca nodded.

Ella walked over to him quickly and shoved him out of her door. He stumbled into the hallway and landed against the opposite wall, his eyes wide before he pretended to be angry.

“I said I was sorry. Now leave me alone,” Ella screamed as loud as she could. Loud enough for the entire city of Riset to hear her. David and Henry walked down the hall as Celeste’s door opened. “I want to be alone for the rest of the night.” Ella glanced at David and Henry, staring them down for a second before turning on her heel and slamming the door behind her.

She groaned, her skin crawling at the display. She shook out her arms. There was no one who annoyed her more than someone who made a scene.

“Ella?” David asked as he knocked on her door.

Ella leaned against it. “I want to be left alone, David. Please…I’m sorry about today. Can we talk tomorrow?”

“Sure.”

She had never heard someone sound so defeated uttering a single word, but there it was. Total defeat. Ella took a deep, quivering breath and collected herself as she leaned against the door, listening for David’s departing footsteps.

Slipping one of her unenchanted suits on was like stepping into herself and becoming who she was meant to be: a protector. Someone who didn’t have to be a perfect lady of the court, but a weapon of the crown. Ella’s entire body relaxed, as though she had been drowning in the skirts and now she was free. She braided her hair, and donned a black cloak, covering her hair and face.

Ella dug to the bottom of her trunk and pulled out her set of glass daggers. She ran her hands over the cool smooth blue glass, warming them. Each one was special and unique. Three were short and curved to resemble claws. Two were standard daggers with curved sharp edges. One was bigger than the rest with several curved edges and thicker glass to handle the pressure of being stabbed into someone’s heart. The last one was Ella’s favorite with a single curve and wide middle. It was thinner, but sharper and could be used to make thin painful cuts. Ella looked over each one, making sure there were no imperfections.

By the time Ella opened her window and crawled out, Luca was doing the same, turning to look at her.
